What is UL 508A Certification?
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 508A certification refers to the process industrial control panel manufacturers undergo to apply a UL 508A Listing Mark on their panels. While the term UL 508A certification is used frequently, UL Listing is the specific certification.
What Does It Mean For a Panel to Be UL 508A Listed?
The UL 508A Listing Mark on an industrial control panel indicates that it has been designed and built to UL 508A standards, and has been certified to comply with the UL 508A standard.
UL 508A Listing is important to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and to the purchaser of the panel, indicating that the panel meets recognized safety standards for electrical equipment used in industrial settings.
UL 508A Listed control panels are:
- Intended for general industrial use
- To be installed in ordinary locations
- Not suitable for hazardous (classified) areas
- To be installed per the National Electrical Code
- To be operated from 1000 volts or less
- Generally installed in locations with an ambient temperature range of 41 – 104° F.
Is UL Certification Required for Industrial Control Panels?
A common question is whether UL certification is legally required. Obtaining a UL Listing is not a mandatory requirement by law or regulation in most jurisdictions. However, compliance with UL 508A is often required by industrial equipment purchasers, electrical inspectors, and insurance providers.
The UL 508A standard is based on the safety rules recommended by the National Electric Code (NEC). It also includes specifications to ensure that panels are capable of enduring environmental factors such as dust, moisture, temperature fluctuations, and corrosion.
While the law does not require UL Listing for industrial control panels, prospective customers, inspectors, and insurance companies often require UL 508A compliance.
National Electrical Code® Subsection (Rule) 409.110(4) requires that an ICP be marked with a short-circuit current rating (SCCR). This ensures that the ICP’s rating meets or exceeds the available fault current at the point of installation. 409.110(4)(b) Informational note (not mandatory) lists ANSI/UL 508A as an example of an approved method for establishing SCCR.
Therefore, although UL Listing is not mandatory from a legal perspective, it is recommended for safety and to ensure panels meet the requirements of all stakeholders.

- Enclosed Industrial Control Panel: refers to a complete control panel assembly housed within a protective enclosure
- Open Industrial Control Panel: refers to a control panel assembly where the electrical components are not housed within a protective enclosure (designed to be installed in an enclosure in the field)
The two types differ primarily in their design and extent of assembly delivered to the customer.
